There sure are some unicorns involved in this game. The seriousness of the previous conversation seems to vanish as Aloysius takes his turn attaching a special item to one of his—in this case sliding a wooden apple onto the horn of his pink unicorn figurine.

Sara’s pretty sure that if she understands the rules right, that is looking to be a really good unicorn he’s setting up … one she should probably bet on and help win for points herself…

“Your turn, Mikael.”

Despite all Mikael’s trash-talking of the game, he seems to be enjoying himself. In fact, the smile on his face is almost serene. Sara can’t help but stare at him, and keep on staring…

“Sara, it’s your turn.”

Oh. Right. Well, if she’s banking a little on one of Aloysius’ unicorns, she wonders if she can set up one of hers to serve as support to his… is there a sparkle color that lets her do that…?

She smiles, rubbing her chin as if it had a beard. Yes, she thinks the blue sparkles will work nicely here.

It’s only when she looks up from affixing the sparkles that it really hits her: she’s playing a silly board game … with two vampires.

And she’s just smiling, and laughing, and strategizing, like this is normal.

This is not happening. There’s no way this is happening.

“Is it my turn?” Aloysius asks.

He’s a vampire. A gorgeous vampire with red rose petals in his hair and she’s—what—friends with him?

“Y-yeah,” she manages to say.

“Is something wrong?”

“I, um,” Sara says. “I’m—I’m not really doing this, am I?”

Aloysius just gives her a confused look. She’s not sure what look Mikael’s giving her but it’s probably not much better. Fuck. She wants to just return to the unicorns now…

“You can talk to us,” Mikael says.

Yeah, that’s the problem.

“I just—it really looks like I’m trying to be a vampire or something, doesn’t it?” Sara says. “Like I’m just … I don’t know … this is really weird, and it’s even weirder that I can just play a game with you guys…”

“Does it bother you?” Mikael asks.

“I think she’s saying that it does,” Aloysius says.

“I mean!” Sara says. “You guys are, like … nice and stuff … I like being here … but I don’t want to look like I’m trying to get something out of you, or anything…”

Aloysius just shakes his head. “You do realize that this started because the two of us were literally trying to get something from you, right? I wouldn’t exactly be mad.”

“But I don’t … want …” to look like I am, Sara finishes in her head. To act like I’m better than anyone else.

“If you don’t want to be a vampire, that is also fine,” Mikael says.

“It takes all kinds, as they say!” Aloysius says. “Would be nice if the faction politics could just realize that.”

Isn’t that already the White Roses’ official position? Sara wonders, but doesn’t say. After all, she’s totally not the kind of person who knows a lot about vampires. Obviously.

“Uh, yeah…” She says.

“You still don’t seem very happy,” Aloysius notes.
